Hello,
I've just bought a new dvd/cd writer that is Lightscribe enabled..
But when i try to burn a DVD with Lightscribe Template Labeler it just gives the error message:
"No Lightscribe Disc in Drive, Put a Lightscribe Disc into it, labelside down.
(4114)" (roughly translated, im swedish..)

Burner is : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-223Q
Discs I use are from Verbatim , 8x DVD+R DL
I also use Vista (64 bit)...
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Slaaf !

I'm using an HP Pavillion dv9825nr Notebook PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1+.  I also have an HP PhotoSmart C8180 All-In-One Printer.  Both have built-in LS Drives.  Everything has been running LSS fine since 4/08.

The Diagnostic Utility shows my drives as:

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\Enum\

0          IDE\CdRomTSSTcorp_CDDVDW_TS-L632N_0503_\5&1a926112&0&0.0.0

Count  2

NextInstance  2

1            USBSTOR\CdRom&Ven_HP&Prod_PhotoSmart_DVD&Rev_NU01\7&13319b7b&0&MY7BGG71HT04YH&1

I use Memorex disks and also HP disks almost all the time, because they are the only ones I seem to find.

If I have any problems with labeling a disk, I clean the center (hub) of the disk before burning the LABEL side first.

I use the LS Template Labeler for the LABEL side and NERO 9 for the DATA side.

I had trouble with the first two spindles I bought.

One disk had a bad DATA side and another (Memorex) had to be re-cleaned in the center (hub) of the disk 3 times of 20 turns of the cleaner, but it burned successfully.

I've also fooled around a little with the LS Simple Labeler.

I've developed over 110 Custom Templates and 4 Test Background Images for the LS SL, and have share them with 112 Forum Users.

Sorry but i cant see this helped :/
my burner is shiny new, so are the DVDs on which i want to burn.. I used the template labeler, put the DVD in with DATA side down first, pressed "preview and burn", it looked for data and then it spat out the DVD and told me to take it in LABEL side down, Did that, it started to work. but it doesnt start to burn, it just gives the error message 4114 and says i dont have a Lightscribe disc in, Ive cleaned it and everything I can do, repair the label program, etc...
I used NERO to burn the DATA side and LS Template Labeler for the LABEL side, which wont even work...

EDIT:
Ran the Diagnostic Utility:
LSS Version: 1.18.6.1

System Settings:
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\Enum\0 - IDE\CdRomTSSTcorp_CDDVDW_SH-S223Q________________SB03____\5&1579f8e3&0&1.0.0

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\Enum\Count - 1

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\Enum\NextInstance - 1

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\allocatecdroms - 0

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom\autorun - 1

SOFTWARE\INTEL\Intel Application Accelerator - Not detected

LightScribe Drivers and Media:

Drive 0 : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223Q SB03 172 (D, No media detected

^ Anything obvious here?

Drive 0 : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223Q SB03 172 The diagnostic report above shows the system is recognizing the drive correctly and the LightScribe software is installed and working correctly. That leaves the hardware connection and the media. The 4114 error is often caused by hardware incompatibility, SATA drivers and their configuration in the BIOS often cause the conflict. A search of the knowledge base for "SATA IDE" has a few articles that may help you solve the issue. http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb_view.aspx?f=122 The article describes a peculiar problem with nVidia drivers.

Sorry, above tip didnt help me much :<
So I went of and tried it at a friends computer who also has LS, but didnt detect any media there either..
So basically its the discs themselves that fail then. Sigh.Verbatim DVD+R DL = fail

Hello again Slaaf !

Some last things just to be sure.

Check for the LS Sensor (see FAQ 67):

http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb_view.aspx?faqid=67

Check for LS Marks on media (see FAQ 85):

http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb_view.aspx?faqid=85

These links come from the "LightScribe Toolbox" in the "Knowledge Base" which can be obtained through the link on the top and the bottom of this page.

Hey!

First link, the icon on drive; I do have that

Second link, the DVD itself, does NOT have a LS icon and/or a barcode around it, at all, here see these two pics:

Hello again Slaaf !

From your first picture, I can tell that the disk is a "printable" disk with a white label side.

You need to find packages that specifically says "LightScribe" and are Version 1.2.

They also have the LightScribe "swoosh" Logo on the package.

Glad I could help!

Thanks for the help first time i use it but now i know a little better before going out and buying something that 'seems' like LS discs :o!
(something irrelevant is that i suspect these are discs that use printers for writing instead of dvd drives >_<

Yes, "printable" disks use special printers that can actually feed the disk  and print it like a piece of paper.  That is why the surface is a matte white finish to accept ink like other Inkjet Printers.

You can still record on the DATA side and use a Sharpie Pen to write on the white surface.  So you can use them for stuff that is not important, but do not want to just delete but you just want to get off your hard drive.

On another topic:

I have made similar posts on other threads.

How I create Labels Containing a Track List

I've put together some stuff I use to create CD Labels.

  • I wrote up the procedure I use in a PDF File.
  • I make PDF Files of any Documentation I create.
  • I have V1.14.32.1 of the LSS and since Version 1.17.90.1 of both the LSS and the corresponding Diagnostic Utility.
  • I include an "Additional Stuff" Folder which contains anything I create while developing My Custom Templates.
  • I created ZIP Files for 6 Windows Vista "Right-Click" Commands I developed to support this and other procedures I use.
  • I "ripped off" the "Template Playlist Beta" "Full" and "Half" Disk Templates; fixed them and create a ZIP File of the two templates.
  • I have a PDF that contains "Template vs. Simple Labelers" - a comparison of what is the structure of each template.
  • I found 5 FREE Tools I use for development, and have more I am testing.
  • I have a PDF which contains a "Mini Resume" and a lot of "LightScribe Stuff" I've researched.
  • I continually develop PDFs on the Tools I use for development.
  • I developed 110 Custom Templates for the Template Labeler.
  • I developed 5 collections of Images.
  • I developed a New Custom Wedding Template for one Forum User and I did one for another Forum User.
  • I fixed one LSL File for another User by changing a White Outline of some Text to Black.
  • I created Previews of all my Custom Templates and Images and have Catalogues of both as PDF Files.
  • I created 173 ICONS and a PDF Preview.
  • I developed 4 Test "borders" for the Simple Labeler.
  • I tend to concentrate on Filling the entire disk surface especially with TEXT, Bold, Outline, White Text, and More Font Control.
  • I have all this and more in My MS Windows Live Skydrive and on My Office Live Workspace.
  • I have just finished writing a 2nd Newsletter and a List of Newsletter Topics about what I've been doing and 2 other FREE Programs I've been researching.
  • 114 Forum Users have taken my offer.

Send me a Private MESSAGE containing:

  • Your correct E-mail Address (REQUIRED BY SITE to send links);
  • Your full name (For my records); and
  • A nickname you use (For my records).

I am retired on a disability, and I do this TOTALLY FREE.

I also try my best to keep E-mail Addresses confidential. I use "Blind Carbon Copies" when I send out anything.

I only occasionally send out Special Notifications, if I do something major.

The only "COST" is your E-mail Address which is REQUIRED both My MS Office Live Workspace and My Windows Live Skydrive to allow access to the stuff I've developed.

I just found out that:
If an Editor or Viewer forwards their E-mail "Invitation" to someone else, that person can use the link in the sharing "Invitation" to view a read-only version of my content.

I'm having a problem reading the lightscribe disc. I have an HP pavilion a1520n from a few years back and I used to make lightscribe cd's all the time. I tried recently and the software runs fine but the discs are never read. I've used different brands of lightscribe software and found the same problem, so it must be with my drive. I've tried both HP and Memorex cd's.

Any ideas how I can get my drive to read the discs again? (Please don't ask me to clean them or put the label down lol). Thanks!

Hi allendongell !

Doesn't sound like cleaning will help - LOL!

Can you read any Commercial Made (Software Distribution) Disk?

If they also can't be read, then I'm afraid the drive is way out if calibration!

If it's just LS Disk made a while ago, try to read them on another system, if you have access to one.

That should tell if the disks are OK and it might just be a problem with the drive.
