So what is this all about?

I bought a new Samsung drive with this new cool Lightscrib feature, I installed Nero 9, I already have another old OEM copy of Nero 6, I installed Acoustica CD Labeler, I installed Lightscribe software and the LS Template Labeler, it was rather funny to label the first 10 disks, but today I wanted to label anther one, and instead of what the preview showed me the disc label was only 10% the size of what I configured in Acoustica.  I tried a second time, with the same cd, the same result.

When I wanted to try the third time the Acoustica software tells me that there is no lightscribe media in the drive.

The Nero 9 Cover designer told me the same.

I looked for firmware updates, nada... I installed the latest LS Update, I rebooted several times, I tried with the same media and with a new media, always the same result.  In the Lightscribe Template Labeler it says error code is 4114, so I found this forum after searching via google after this error code... it seems that I am not the only one with trouble.

So what now?  Is m drive broken?  After only 10 labelings?  Will you return my the money for media I bought (lightscribe media are twice as expensive as normal media)?  What do you think I think now about you and your famous lightscribe technology?

Basically I spent hours of time to find the prpoper drive, then I needed to browse through internet to get it to work... there is NO software provided with the drive package by the drive manufacturer, there is NO software provided by the Label software manufacturer, also not much help on their side.  I needed to use Google to find the lightscribe.com website and it lasted nearly 60 minutes to figure out what I need to download and so on.

IMO this all is a big can of worms and I hope that you will improve the while situation, or your lightscribe technology will vanish from this planet faster than you can say good bye.

Hi Gerrit !

I had a similar problem with the first 2 spindles of Memorex Media that I got (I can only find HP and Memorex most of the time).

I was able to recover all but one of the disks (the one had a bad DATA side).

All I did, believe it or not, was clean the LABEL side especially the hub which has LS Marks used for Media Detection, Positioning, and Timing.

Well, it is really annoying, now it worked with this disc.  The next gives me error 4321 after 20% of the process.

It can't be that difficult... writing data on CD worked for me always, forever WITHOUT cleaning the disc.  what is so much different?  Just so the software knows where the top is are marks needed?  Why is it that difficult to read those three markers?

And why the hell does it happen all the time, that there are communication errors and the print is stopped?  Is the hardware that is #$*&^##, do the manufacturers provide #$*&^## hardware?  Or are the media #$*&^##?

Why is cleaning such an issue when I take new media from the spindle?

The most significant things about doing a label are:

  1. DVDs have an extra plastic layer over the LS Coating.  This means DVDs come out lighter.
  2. The whole LABEL surface must be burned for a label, un-like the DATA side where only the needed surface is burned, so it's faster.
  3. The plastic over the coating must be spotless so the coating takes the burn.
  4. Un-like the DATA side which can be burned only once, the LABEL side can be burned multiple times to make the Image darker (the LS Marks means the Image goes in the exact same place.
  5. You have to think of it like a photographic process.

Overall it's not as simple as most people think.

Well, if the burn starts successfully, it fails at least once during the process for every media I want to burn.  Most of the times it fails more often, two or even three times per media.

This may be more complicated than it looks like, however it shouldn't have been released to the public unless it is stable and easy to use, the averge Jane Doe will try it once and after the first error she won't try it again forever.

I just continue to use it because I have all these expensive media now.

Other than this I find it much more convenient to print on a disc than to burn it, and additionally printing is also colored.

If you ask me, Lightscribe will not make it to the masses, it will be gone in a few years from now, it is to slow and error prone.

Sigh.

Currently I am trying to burn on a media and it failed already 10 times during theprocess, it is completely unrelated to the media, after the first three failures I opened the drive and took the media out and then I put it back and closed the drive.  It still fails, after 12% of the process or 24% or 48%, once it made it above 50%, that was the last time I looked at the interface.  Now it is at 63%, hooray I say!

The point is that it will become darker at the beginning of the burn than at the end, if it fails again it will become completely black at the beginning, it should be possible to start from the middle or some custom point so I don't need to burn the first 50% over and over again.

What I wonder about is, why don't you hire some good programmer and let this software be written so it is actually working? Or implement an universal open source driver so some people with more time on hands can review the code?  Or whatever, make it so that it works for John Doe without problems.

EDIT: And while you are on it, fix this #$*&^## forum application.

EDIT2: Finally it failed at 66% this time.

Ain't funny this #$*&^##!
