I have several HP laptops including a very nice DV2000.  Had an optiarc dvd re ad-7561a ata device.  Was a nice drive.  My daughter worked it to death but until it died, lightscribe worked fine.  HP sent me a drive to swap.  They sent me an Matshita UJ-850S.  The first drive was not recognized as a lightscribe drive no matter what we did.  I was on the phone for 2 1/2 hours by the way, not counting on-line chat time with HP.

So they sent me another drive. They sent me EXACTLY the same model drive, the Matshita UJ-850S and guess what, this drive doesn't find itself as a lightscribe drive either.

I search the web and find lots of complaints about these Matshita models, 850/851/852 drives including things like lightscribe issues.

I demanded HP have one of the "case managers" call me back and I will recieve a call next week.  I work until then so that is my choice.

However what is the deal with these Matshita drives?

By reading this forum I found the pictures for the Lightscribe sensor.  Seems like an easy enough way to check drives to make sure they are actually lightscribe drives.  Plus in searching the web I found other folks having issues with this drive not doing lightscribe.  Sure enough no sensor on this drive.  I checked my other laptops which do have lightscribe drives in them, and equally as sure, those drives have the sensor.

I contacted HP again.  Seems to me they have something flagged wrongly in their parts database.  I chatted on line with them as was able to point them to the pictures I took of my lightscribe enabled drives and this apparently non-lightscribe drive.  They were very interested and are correcting the database.  I'm still talking to a case manager next week however.

You'd think the folks here, the Lightscribe folks, would be all over this.  Consumers are not going to separate the issues.  Folks will lump all of these kinds of frustrations into one "issue" and it will be a problem with this lightscribe technology in general.  When in reality it has nothing to do with Lightscribe technology.

I would suspect that is not exactly what the lightscribe folks would like to see in this market.

Sure would be nice if the Lightscribe folks could contact HP and ask them to take a look at IF their parts database has issues impacting end users of the Lightscribe technology.

Hi Jim !

You've peaked my curiosity!

Could you post the link to the sensor information.

I'm interested, and I'm sure others are too.

Well since my last post HP has now sent me TWO of the same non-lightscribe drives.  The exact same non-lightscribe drives!  Talk about insanity.

HP has flagged something internally about this drive that is in error.  Their parts folks just pull what HP's data base tells them is the "right" drive.  HP keeps making the same mistake over and over despite my showing them pictures and the evidence/proof that this Mashita drive does not have the relevant lightscribe sensor.

I still do not understand why Lightscribe is not on top of this kind of thing with HP?  I'm ready to throw lightscribe in the garbage can and move to some other disk labeling technology.  Is that really what Lightscribe wants the public to experience?

HP has finally agreed that maybe they have a problem with their parts database and having a non-Lightscribe drive indexed as a Lightscribe drive.   Since the bezel has a lightscribe emblem on it, I'd say its a bigger problem internally at HP than just an index being off in their parts database.  Something is royally messed up somewhere.

So progress is being made.  However I am still not very happy that I have to wait for a company the size of HP to get its act together to then get the right drive to me.  There are several different models listed with lightscribe for my HP DV2910US.  Why they can't just visually look at the drive, send me an Optiarc or LG TRUE lightscribe drive is beyond me.

Any I guess no one from Lightscribe is reading these forums or they are and they just don't give a hoot.  Does not bode well for Lightscribe.......!

HP still jerking me around.  Totally unacceptable.  In the mean time they've sent me an external drive.  And it has the light scribe sensor.  Amazing, hey?

While that seems nice, glad to have it, we have laptops for a reason.  Its not so we can take a bunch of external devices and find places to plug them in, etc.

Practical while home sitting at a desk.  Not practical at all when actually using a laptop for why we have laptops in the first place.

My opinion of HP is really taking a hit on this one.  Talk about foot dragging.

They have getting their internal issue fixed bound to/with me getting the correct lightscribe drive.  In other words I have to wait for HP to get its act together internally before they'll act on my issue.  Anyone have a clue how long it takes for a huge oil tanker of a company like HP to fix something?  I'll be ready for a new laptop by the time they get their act together.

Totally frustrating!

And again, where is light scribe on stuff like this?  Does light scribe think my opinion of light scribe technology does not take a hit as well?  I just don't get it.

Jim,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems with HP.

You're correct about the folks at LightScribe.

I know their HP employees, but you'd think they would be be #$%^&*(+@! at their parent company and trying to help get the problem fixed ASAP.

They should really get after the folks at HP about the problem.

HP probably screwed up real bad and shipped a lot of Laptops and Notebooks with the wrong drive, otherwise they probably would have been quicker.

On one of the other hardware forums that I have shared my frustration with one of the main folks on that forum, a computer engineer type dude, explained that NO Matshita drives have Light Scribe.

I still do not understand why no one from Light Scribe has posted in this thread and has not taken HP parts/service to task on this issue.

That lack of participation on Light Scribe's part is part of why I have backed away from being a light scribe kinda guy.....

Jim,

Sorry to hear that, but I have to say that I've researched other labeling technologies and other LightScribe Labeling programs.

All the other labeling technologies are considerably more expensive even if you account for label fading.

Also, almost all other LightScribe Labeling programs use a proprietary file format while the LS Template Labeler uses relatively simple XML structures to do all the work.

I'm a stroke survivor and I don't write very well, so using LightScribe Labeling is much cleaner than trying to label with a Sharpie.

I still do not understand nor can I imagine a reasonable reason why the folks at Light Scribe offer no comment of support nor assistance.

Is Light Scribe a nice technology?  Sure.  Is it so great it is worth this kind of frustration?  Not a chance.

Do the folks at Light Scribe not have the sense to connect the dots between them having a job and a growing market share for Light Scribe drives?  Do they not understand that them having a job is directly tied to people like me having good experiences with Light Scribe and recommending it to others so that more and more computers have Light Scribe drives?

Their jobs depend on people just like me having good experiences with Light Scribe technology on every level.  You'd think they'd give a #$*&^## about my experience if only out of self interest.  Again I just don't get it.

Jim

Hi Jim !

I hate to say this, but maybe you should just get another drive!

Maybe you could sell the one you have on eBay, and get some of your money back!

I have good luck with everything I've gotten with the HP Logo on it!

BUT!

Would not mind doing so but that isn't as easy as it sounds.  Need correct bezel and I do not want to void my service contract with HP.

Hi Jim !

Just so you know, I have an HP PhotoSmart C8180 Printer which is a Color Printer, 4x6 Photo Printer, Scanner, Memory Card Reader, and LS Drive USB Extension to my PC.

It is Wireless and Bluetooth capable, but it needs the USB connection to access all the features of the printer, and it sells for a whopping $300.  But I have been very pleased with it, and I recently found out it will scan negatives and slides!

Well the external drive HP sent me to hold us over just quit.  Seems like power supply wall wart gizmo isn't working right.

Friday, May 15th.  No word from HP.  And the external drive they sent me to use "in the mean time", its external power supply has gone bad and is now useless.

Well finally. HP sent me the correct lightscribe drive. It took my case being assigned to new case manager, one specifically for technical support. Proper drive arrived today, June 5th. This started in January. Amazing!

Just got the drive in the mail.  Checked it manually this time first for the sensor.

Asus was putting the Matshita 850S in laptops for more than a year.  Always listed as lightscribe enabled when sold on sites like newegg.  Probably the blame lies with Matshita misrepresenting their product's capability.  But ultimately I fault system manufacturers for not testing the product.

Furthermore, I've had more failed burns with that drive than anything I've used previously.
