It is unfortunate what happened to your second burn, hard to suggest the cause and solution even witht he vast amount of info you gave.

Assuming your 2nd disc actually spun and you watched the progress meter, it could very well been caused by a RAM error (lack of) which would have occurred after you were prompted to insert the 2nd blank copy.

The issue has been rare in my experiences but happens more frequently on Windows than MaC (never with LINUX) and most often with Windows Vista.

Did you get any or partial burn of text or graphics on the 2nd copy and which burning application were you using ?

Although LightScribe System Software is free & obtainable directly from the Lightscribe http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/windows/index.aspx?id=810 site - you'll notice that the latest LightScribe ESD software [LS_Update_1.18.26.7_.exe] - fails to fully complete its install due to an error within their latest LightScribe system software update as this is an issue w/ either the software makers/venders or uploaders! So you can't use it & so either wait for a new LightScribe software update or just use an earlier LightScribe software version as follows:-

In order to correctly install any previous LightScribe System Software which is an earlier LightScribe System Software version release rather than the current installed version:- the same still applies to upgrading to any new LightScribe System Software release version:-> please go to the "Control Panel" & "open up "Applications and features" & in there you'll need to select "Lightscribe System Software" so that this software can be fully removed & then proceed to un-install it! - After that you'll be able to fully install any previous/new LightScribe System Software as a clean install.

The above [LS_Update_1.18.24.1_.exe] software package will fully install the LSS on any Windows 8 Enterprise/Professional (x64) RTM Build: 9200 operating system which was obtained from out of a portion of my previous BD-R (LightScribe web-site) LightScribe System Software.mht complete web page together w/ ESD backup of an older LightScribe software version which I had done & still use due to those [LS_Update_1.18.26.7_.exe] Windows 8 (x64) installation issues!

LightScribe was conceived by Hewlett-Packard engineer Daryl Anderson. Further details can be found at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LightScribe regarding LightScribe which has now ended in May 2011 & includes details about a stable release v1.18.24.1 for computer's LighScribe Optical Drives, & as such would be classified as the software part of of a computer's LighScribe Optical Drives hardware! Although HP www.hp.com did & still possibly supply www.lightscribe.com with their lightscribe drivers for downloads - one can also get them from HP as well - but maybe some users would not know exactly where to go within HP's site as HP aren't very clear with regards to finding this old data & the LightScribe Optical Drive would be useless without the LightScribe System Software due to LightScribe which ended in May 2011!

"Beginning in May 2011, HP LightScribe® technology optical disc drives will be at the end of their production life in HP Desktop Workstations and Commercial Desktop PCs."

Here is HP (US) alternative to the www.lightscribe.com site due to these "lightscibe - multiple site failures" over the week-ends & on week-days as no one seems to get much from LighScribe!

If any of the above LightScribe software fails - then you could either try to use the HP LightScribe System Software - v1.18.20.1 REV: A. (sp51638.exe) made by HP on their US site http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitemb-91820-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en as I've tested it out on my RTM edition of Windows 8 Professional (x64) - Build 9200 it both correctly installed & worked each time under (3) different clean install tests - or if that fails for any reasons then you could try one that Nero provides within either Nero 11 & 12 suites & try to use the latest Nero 11/12 software build - as both the Nero 11/12 suites & above provide LightScribe system software which usually gets installed during any clean Nero 11/12 installation!

Under Windows 8 Enterprise/Professional (x64) - should the LightScribe System Software for Nero 12 Platinum fail to be installed, you'll then need to use the www.lightscribe.com site to both download & manually install the LightScribe System Software yourself after Nero 12 Platinum has been installed - as I manually installed LightScribe System Software LS_Update_1.18.24.1_ which was obtained from a previous Blu-ray backup as I was unable to locate it within Nero 12 Platinum possibly caused by the new LightScribe System Software build install error which I explained in my first two lines (top) et cetera

a) This is where LightScribe System Software should be placed within Nero 12 Platinum (Nero Express) once it´s fully installed as per both of these screenshots shows!

I also had to manually install Nero CoverDesigner as Nero now provides this as a freebie add-on which has to be downloaded seperately for their new Nero 12 suites! Notice that the LightScribe System Software is also available within the Nero CoverDesigner as well!

b) This is where LightScribe System Software should be placed within Nero 12 Platinum (Nero CoverDesigner) once it´s fully installed as per both of these screenshots shows!

An alternative possibly if it works is for you to select an appropriate LightScribe software from "your LightScribe product manufacturer which will have the best knowledge of your specific configuration and needs, and they are recommended as your first source of updates whenever possible." - Use the "Dropdown Listings" & then save an appropriate executable file to your "Downloads" folder & then run the ESD after the download has completed as it may be able work w/ most LightScribe Optical Drives on the market today!

Notice:- Roxio Creator 2012 Pro & below doesn't provide any "LightScribe" system software during any installs at all! If you use any Roxio 2009 & above products, you'll then need to use the www.lightscribe.com site for your "LightScribe" system software!

The "Splash Screens for the Template Labeler & the Simple Labeler have Check Boxes to stop them from being displyed when they're started, but I've NEVER seen any kind of AD on any of the Installs!?!?!

I've "burned" over 100 LS Disk on my 2 LS Drive & have gotten this a few times.

Sometimes, for an unknown reason, one of my drives (usually the internal one) seemd to get "hung up" & removing the disk & rebooting the system is needed to clear it up.

Have you tried this?

I have an external CD/DVD enclosure with Firewire 800 & 400, eSATA and USB. I have tried all connections and the only one that communicates is USB. I had a LaCie external that had Firewire 400 and it worked perfect. Was that something special to LaCie or has something changed?

Unfortunately, the ONLY thing that matters is the "cleanliness" of the LABEL side.

If a Disk doesn't work the first time, ALL hat I do is wipe the surface & burn again.

It has ALWAYS worked the second time, even if nothing is done the first time!

You may be getting interference from AUTOPLAY!

I find that this is almost eliminated if you wait to close the disk tray until you start the "PRINT" Process. If AUTOPLAY starts, it MUST be closed BEFORE OKing the "PRINT" Process.

On a Mac, you should ONLY be able to us the LS Simple Labeler, which only does "Borders" & 2 Curved Text Items.

The TEMPLATES are only for use with the LS Template Labeler, which does quite a bit more.

     You are correct in your observation that this forum seems to be a user only forum with no link to official tech support. Below is a link to a form that used to be used to submit and provide feedback on prerelease or beta Lightscribe software applications. It hasn't been active for me for some time now. I really don't know if it currently goes to a group that does software changes and enhancements but it wouldn't hurt to try it. Even when you call HP tech support about a Lightscribe issue they refer you to this website.  Since the LTL program is free and fairly full featured I pretty much have a tendency to forgive its shortcomings.

     BTW I created a separate font with commonly used characters in an attempt to solve the insert that way but since a single LTL text box can only utilize one font in the selected box that didn't work.

MBI recommends their finished discs be stored in "appropriate" plastic sleeves for storage. I have been told (not by anyone representing MBI) to store CDs and DVDs in CPP (cast polypropylene) plastic sleeves for archiveal purposes. That family of plastic is supposed to be inert with blank media dye. You probably should try to contact MBI  (Moser Baer India) for engineering information about the type of organic dye they use but that may be unrealistic.  It's a real bummer to discover the Lightscribe degradation after thinking that it is a non issue. There are no MBI stateside manufacturing locations I know of but try contacting Rajeev Krishnan of the west coast corporate office at   info.usa@moserbaer.in

The Simple Labeler uses a 2773x2773 Pixel JPG File for the "background" Image.

You could include ALL text in an edited JPG & NO text in the 2 fields.

Instead of Save I did a Run & it worked.

For the rest of the LightScribe Community, you can actually disable the auto-eject feature. But apparently you can't disable stupidity.

Hmm... double check the inner ring of the disc, the part with all the shiny reflective bar-code stuff. If that section is dirty, the drive will not be able to read where to burn the image.

Some report that inner ring to be dirty and that cleaning with a damp cloth fixes it.

Others report disc defects. If that's the case, return it to the place you purchased it and get a new stack of discs.

Just to start, I have that exact Drive and it works great. I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

But to help, what labeling program do you use? And let me clarify, you did successfully burn a label, right?

Thank you Lightscribe ppls. I had my old Lite On drive go out but I was so happy with it...it lasted like 8 years and was a little workhorse- my daughter has a drive that is over 10 years old still working for her...I got another Lite On and decided to check out the lightscribe stuff and get it in Sata rather then IDE. I am so happy I did all of that. I found that it was said that the best contrast was on verbatim disks so those are what I got (they have a good rep anyway). I just did my first disc and I am bouncing in my chair happy. For anyone who is wondering I am using Nero 8 and I got the template program from here and am burning my second from the template program with the first being a custom template I made in Nero. Too bad it can't actually burn in color...that would be the bomb but I am aware you can get different background colors on the discs.  What a relief that I don't have to worry about having labels and enough ink to print them out....it's all in the burner if you have the right discs.

I anticipate new computers for myself and each of my two kids next year and I WILL be getting them the lightscribe drives as well for their systems.

I have heard that clarity of image has everything to do with the discs you use....cheap discs equal bad results...the least complaints were with verbatim discs....seldom if ever a bad disc and raves about the clarity of image on the lightscribe whereas even with Memorex there were complaints about the clarity of image. I went a stint with cheap regular discs...so many coastered or didn't store well, but I guess what you get what you pay for...from now on it is just going to be verbatim all the way.

I am on XP as I absolutely REFUSE to go to a new OS prefering to wait until the OS is not longer supported before I switch over...less bugs and problems that way. And like I said the drive is SATA and using Nero or the programs provided on this site for the lightscribe functions.

Yep, I am sure there are some bugs in some situations but this is GREAT as far as I can see. Like I said before I am absolutely thrilled with this and so glad I spent the money on the drive and discs I did.

This happens to me rarely, but LS Disks have Marks in the hub of the disk which are used for Media Detection, Positioning, & Timing.

These Marks allow you to re-burn the label in the exact same location on the disk.

I usually just re-clean the LABEL side including the Marks & do the burn again.

The previously un-burned part is lighter than the rest of the label.
