HP Photosmart Premier or the LightScribe Diagnostic Utility is not recognizing the LightScribe media. The media is clean, inserted properly into the LightScribe drive, LightScribe System Software updated from LightScribe site, HP software updated using HP Software Update, Windows XP updated using Windows Update, memory upgraded from 512 mb to 2.5 gb. Still, out of a spindle of 30 LightScribe discs, only 6 are recognized by any software or the LightScribe Diagnostic Utility. How do I check for software conflicts or software programs that reserve your DVD drive resources? How do I fix this problem?

since your drive is able to detect some of the discs, it is possible that you have some marginal or defective media.

Please try to detect different discs from the same spindle using the diagnostics utility.

You can download the LightScribe Diagnostics Tool for Windows (Vista/XP/2K) from the following URL:

http://lightscribe.com/downloadSection/windows/index.aspx?id=1106

Choose the Advanced View on the toolbar. Insert different LightScribe discs from the same package label side down, and then click on "Get System Info" and then "Scan for LightScribe Drive and Media"

If the majority of the spindle is not recognized, you should return or exchange the media.

Please inspect the discs for defects, smudges, or scratches on disc; the center pinwheel feature of the disc contains timing functions as well as identification "bar code" information that the drive must be able to read.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

Check if there is a firmware update available for your optical drive. Firmware updates normally correct problems and improve drive performance, including better media recognition and burn quality. You can find updates for HP/Compaq computers on the following URL:

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers

Wipe both the label and data sides of the LightScribe disc with a water-damped soft cloth, especially the pinwheel features at the center of the disc and retry using the same disc. Sometimes recognition errors are recoverable with subsequent tries.

If you are seeing the media detection error immediately (instead of about 1/2 to 1 minute); then your LightScribe software installation may be corrupted. You should uninstall your LightScribe System Software (LSS) and re-install it with a clean install.

If you have access to another computer with a LightScribe drive, you may try your media in another drive. The next step would be to try a different package of media on your drive; preferably a different brand of disc and see if that helps, such as, TDK, Memorex, Imation or Verbatim.
