I got that error too, figured it out though.

You need to install the latest windows installer.

you can get it at http://update.microsoft.com through automatic updates or you can search microsoft.com for "windows installer".

Hi,

My computer crashed a couple of days ago, and I was forced to do a system restore.  Since that time I have not been able to use my Lightscribe Template Labeler.  When I click on Preview and Print, I get the error that the LSS (Lightscribe System Software) is not installed.  I have installed and uninstalled it umpteem times, along with uninstalling the Lightscribe Template Labeler, and trying to reinstall that.   When I try to install the latter I get the error message that the file instmsi30.exe is not found.  I have installed the latest version of Windows Installer (4.5) to try and fix that problem, but nothing I have done has worked so far.  Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated

Michelle

Hi Michelle Casserd  !

I did some quick research, and the following link gets you to a website where you can download Windows Installer 3.0 which is suppose to fix that problem.

http://www.cormanlisp.com/download.html

I tested to be sure what it does.  It downloads an executable named "instmsi30.exe" which is suppose to be the installer.

Hope this helps!

Hi again,

Thank you for your prompt reply, but I have already tried intaling the file instmsi30.exe. from that same website, and I got the message "Setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying.  There is no need to install this update."  And I got that message before I installed Windows Installer 4.5.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Michelle

Hello again Michelle  !

You may have to Un-install V4.5; Install V3.0; and then Re-install V4.5!

That may be the only way to get rid of the error.  V3.0 may leave a part of itself around so future upgrades like V4.5 will work!?!?!

I had the same failure message after reformatting my computer. I tried all the suggestions posted but none worked. I was trying to download and install the Lightscribe Template Labeler on Lightscribes website with no success. What fixed my problem was to look for lightscribe software on another site and install it. Here is the link with the download for the template labeler that worked for me:

Error message or issue
Solution

A communication error with the LightScribe drive has occurred. Please restart your LightScribe labeling application and try your label again.

If this error occurs again, please restart your computer and try your label again.

Restart your LightScribe labeling application and try your label again.

If you see this error message again, your LightScribe drive and computer need to be restarted:

  • If you have an internal LightScribe drive, simply restart your computer.
  • If you have an external LightScribe drive, turn off your computer and drive, then turn on your drive, and then turn on your compouter.

Then try your label again.

Have you run the diagnostic tool from lightscribe?
